review 1: My first exposure to Robert Rankin, er how can I best describe this, not too bad I suppose. The last 100 pages or so where the narrative returns to England were a real drag, but before that around the fairgrounds, on the the airship and Island I was actually quite enjoying it although it's never as funny as it perhaps should be. For this kind of thing I think I'll stick to Terry Pratchett and Jasper Fforde.
review 2: Robert Rankin is usually very hit and miss, and his narration style is so haphazard that it can be rather disconcerting in many of his books. That being said, this book is actually much more linear and conventional in narrational style which makes it surprisingly readable! ... morealf makes for a rather over the top, fun complication and climax. Although definitely resolved with a /literal/ deus ex machina (even acknowledged within in the text itself), this is one of Rankin's better works (in terms of style). less
