review 1: I really like this series; I like the characters, I like the city (Toronto), I like the dynamics by which the plots unfold. I also like that Mr Rotenberg makes the effort to release the information about the crime in an "organic" way. I have always disliked the practice of many mystery writers (including many of the luminaries; Christie, Doyle) of withholding vital clues from the reader until the detective reveals the resolution of the investigation at the end of the book in a big "TADA". Rotenberg has my admiration for the way in which the reader gets to know what each of the characters knows; the suspense comes as we get to see how the facts, that are dispersed among many sources, are assembled into a cohesive whole.
review 2: A pleasure from start to finish.
... more A fast, twisting, surprising, and gripping story. Characters I want more of--Ari Greene, his dad, Daniel Kennicott, Awotwe Amankwah. Lots of stuff I'm interested in learning about--courtroom procedure, the way lawyers and judges think and work, how criminals think and work. Add in some extraordinarily timely politicians--Hap Charlton should only have a brother named 'Doug' and the parallels would be complete. I loved this book and can't wait for Robert Rotenberg's next one. less
