review 1: Whittaker makes a solid argument about the misrepresentation of psychiatric drugs and the state of mental health care in the United States. This was a great read that hopefully will get people doing more research about mental health options rather than just asking their primary care doctor for the latest drug they saw advertised on tv. Cognitive behavioral therapy is shown in study after study to be as effective or more effective, in some cases, as many of the drugs Whittaker talks about in this book. But due to various marketing campaigns, groups such as NAMI view mental health issues as illnesses only to be treated with drugs. People think drugs work faster than therapy, when the research doesn't seem to support that the drugs work much at all.

... morery convincing argument that America's mental health crisis is caused, not helped, by pyschopharmacology. Full of horrifying anecdotes of people with minor mental health issues who ended up put on drugs and transformed into life-long psychiatric patients, now unable to function normally. I always thought anti-depressants and anti-psychotics fixed chemical imbalances, so I was surprised to learn they actually perturb normal brain function. less
