review 1: I read a LOT of medical books - some filled with case histories, some filled with statistics, others filled with both. This book...I don't really know what to say. It was a 'both', but it wasn't engaging at all. It felt like the author's main point - 'if drugs are so great, why is mental illness on the rise?' - was made in the first chapter, and the rest of the book was just a rehash and angry filler.Couldn't finish.
review 2: Whitaker's foray into the missteps of psychiatry described many of the misgivings I have had since being "diagnosed" in 2009. I share his conclusions that medication is not always beneficial for patients and that in many cases the medications or their side effects actually worsen the outcome for patients suffering from any number of sympt... moreoms. This book confirmed my own assessment that most of the psychiatric medications on the market actually cause more harm with long term use. less
