review 1: This is the debut for detective Cayatano and as such I feel it was just that, a debut. As Jane Smiley says every novel has its trouble spots. I felt our detective's quest at Neruda's behest went on a bit too long. But, having said that, the author set himself the daunting task of staying true to history. That is where he kept my interest. Think of the difficulty of weaving a story like this around the twist and turns of facts that cannot be changed and enjoy his skill. I'll look for the next one in English.

If you can buy into the original premise that a Nobel Prize winning poet Pablo Neruda would hire a young man with no experience other than from his reading of Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret novels, you will be carried along. If you want not stop action, mayhem, murder, psychopaths with chain saws in dark alleyways, then you will likely find this fine novel boring. less

Made it to page 151 but could not finish it. Truthfully, I was bored with the story.
