review 1: While this is not a book for those looking for historical accuracy, it is a wonderfully written fictional story about a woman heretofore unknown to the world, da Vinci's mother. The first quarter of the book goes by a little slowly; but once she gets to Florence and meets Lorenzo de Medici, it is quite engaging. In truth, this is as much (or more) a story of Florence at the time of Leonardo da Vinci as it is a story of the people. While the human aspect is entirely fashioned of imagination, the story of Italy itself is fairy factual.
review 2: I read this many years ago and have quite the fascination with Italian things so I picked it up again. The author is amazing at character development, at making historical figures seem so real you feel as though you
... more have met them or they could be your neighbors. I forgot how much focus is put on the sexual practices of that era which I didn't enjoy reading again. The other parts about politics, alchemy, philosophy, etc. were enjoying to read all set in the beautiful city of Florence. Reading it twice might be enough for me now that I remember the other unpleasant parts of the time but I really do have to complement the author's ability to write about people so realistically. It was also an interesting theory with the main character going about as a man and wondering "...what would it take to thrust me from Paradise to Hades? The ...drawing in of my bodice...loosing of my hair and the softening of my voice?" Such simple things and yet that is exactly those things that would have kept her from society, the bright minds of the time, and so much learning. less
