review 1: A writing professor talks about how he teaches writing by describing his writing class. The usual stuff, cut down on adjectives and adverbs, develop characterization by descriptive word choice and action, and so forth. He definitely prefers a pared down style of writing. My favorite part was the inspirational letter he wrote at the very end. In it he explains that more than mastering writing techniques, what we write must move the human heart. You must write as if your reader needs you desperately, because he does.
review 2: A snapshot of Rosenblatt's creative writing seminar, this slim volume manages to give a valuable look at how to be a good writer without becoming too long-winded or overly-specific. It is really more a look at the way writers and students
... morereveal themselves both in writing and discussing it. The main weakness, and one that is more specific to me than a weakness in the book itself, is that conversations involve a lot of people - 12 students were in the semester Rosenblatt used to frame his work. That's a lot of voices to follow in a printed conversation, and I prefer not to hear from more than 3 or 4 people. I think this would be fairly valuable for new writers or writing students, but perhaps even more so for teachers of creative writing. less
