review 1: What an odd book! Recommended to me by a local librarian, this memoir has a bit of everything. Some of Rosenblatt's anecdotes were pageturning memories of life in an NYC from year's ago. I loved his depiction of the "perfect crime", his logic for delaying the restaurant specials for as long as possible, his tidbits of information relating to the history of the Big Apple's famous neighborhoods (who lived where, etc., and his reviews of classic detective tales, and thoughts on famous characters. Everyone from Charlie Chan to Jessica Fletcher gets a dedication. But these moments are few and far between. The bulk of the work challenged me to not grab the remote. Excellent writing, but far too many zzzzz's.
review 2: Whimsical, funny and thoughtful memoir. Ros
... moreenblatt recalls his childhood following people in the streets, making up stories about them in his guise as private investigator. But there is a lot more than that in here; on memory and memoir writing and why it's not a good idea to pick up WH Auden at the airport. Kind of all over the place really. It'd be a great book to read before a trip to NYC since this is a love note to the city. less
