review 1: I love Ron Hansen's writing. This is the 4th of his books I've read and they have all been radically different but equally entertaining. This is a novel (but well-reearched and using quotes and information from primary sources) about the Snyder-Gray murder; a discontented woman in New York in the late 1920s persuades her salesman lover to help her kill her husband (essentially the plot of the movie Double Indenmity). The characters are well-drawn and believable, as is his description of the era. (Makes our mass media look tame.) And his description of the two executions by electrocution just confirms my extreme dislike of the death penalty.
review 2: I thought Ron Hansen wrote one of my very favorite books about writing but he didn't so that is why i read th
... moreis book. I think I also read Mariette in Ecstasy years ago and loved it. The prose is thrillingly good but after the first third, the narrative drive and the emptiness of the characters made finishing the book an act of will. I just couldn't care and too much of the character change happens off page or in summary. less

Good storyteller - nice look at the 1920's era stuff -- kinda dragged in places
