review 1: After shelving these books a million times at the public library, I decided to check out this popular Ron Roy series. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed and though the story seemed overly complicated (too many characters, strange circumstances, and convoluted explanation). I thought there were some really great moments, such as the aliens at the window and the note, but I just wish it was more simplistic and refined. Overall I'm not sure if I will continue to with the A-Z series.. maybe I'll just check out the letters that look interesting.
review 2: This book is a part of a series of mystery chapter books written for second-third grade readers. January Joker, is the first in the series and introduces the main characters (boys and girls ages 7-12), who are frien
... moreds and relatives. One night some of the children have a strange encounter with what appears to be aliens… or is it just Nate playing a prank again? The children collect enough clues to convince themselves that this time the paranormal activity might be for real. It’s strange enough when the children see what looks like little green men, unknown footprints, and a suspicious circle in the snow, where a possible flying saucer may have landed. But when some of their friends call them from outer space saying they were abducted by aliens, things start to get serious. This predictable story features simple characters and events you would expect to find in a chapter books series written for 7 to 9-year-olds. Young readers will enjoy trying to solve the mystery by putting together clues and making their own predictions about what might have happened. Children will also connect with the relationships between the young characters, which tease and play pranks, which usually cause some upset and consequences in the end. less
