review 1: It took me a long time to get into the cadence of this book and I had to put it down and come back to it some months later. Still, though I finished it, there were too many times when the thoughts and emotions and events being depicted were beyond me. Often times, I felt ignorant reading this book, like I simply lacked the depth of human understanding to comprehend what was taking place in these characters' heads. Maybe I do, or maybe it was the second person. I don't know, but I just could not immerse myself in this book.
review 2: Lyrically enstranging, this book fairly seethes literary ambition. The language is razor-concise. Shorn of all that does not sing or bite or chill. Emerging from a colossal bog of overwritten, needlessly distended, and largely tooth
... moreless “fantasy” novels, The Mapmaker’s War thoughtfully cultivates a pointed intensity virtually unseen in the genre. A thread pulled utterly taught. A ghost of warm breath on a crisp winter morning. A crystalline surge of adrenaline through the gray matter of a bloated, half-sleeping literary tradition.-Keltin less
