review 1: First book in the series, and I will definitely read more. Very interesting plot, characters & setting. I especially liked the incorporation of historical figures in the story (Sir Francis Drake, Sir Francis Walsingham, etc.) and the use of Protestant vs. Catholic conflicts as a major plot element. [I think it's important for people today to realize that there was a time, not too long ago, when people of these "Christian" faiths actively persecuted, tortured, & killed one other.] My only real complaint is that there were so many plot threads to be wrapped up, the book went on a bit too long.
review 2: Good tory though not as fast paced as Parris' "Heresy". Enjoyable easy reading which builds up to a comfortable climax. like the description of the growing relati... moreonship between John Shakespeare and Catherine Marvell. How he manages to live with her as his wife in the next books will be intriguing, he being an Anglican and she being a Roman Catholic and those were intransigent times. the mood and atmosphere of Elizabethan London are vividly captured. altogether a satisfying book and well worth the read. less
