review 1: Some of my favorite books take place in a Finnish, Russian or East European setting. I love the bleakness and raggedness of the former Soviet and the East European countries. In this book, the young Finnish protagonist (known only as The girl) travel the Transsiberian railway with a Russian man, who's holding endless monologues. They drink black Russian tea and eat black bread, eggs, onions, pickled cucumbers. Outside their window the Siberian landscape doesn't change much - the narrative mostly takes place inside their heads. It's a trip that will change both their lives.
