review 1: I don't usually like to be completely negative about a book but in this case I'm forced to make an exception. This has to be the worst book I have read in a very long time. The plot, such as there is, is mostly predictable yet completely lacks any kind of credibility. The characters are wooden caricatures and the writing is so lamentable that I can scarcely believe that the author is (apparently) a journalist! One of the characters is a teenager whose turns of phrase are cringe-inducingly unnatural...in that no teenager has, or will use them...ever! Having finished the book I am no wiser as to why the main character was left the villa in the first place but if you are a fan of Mills & Boon/Barbara Cartland then you may take some comfort in the fact that our girl:Inherit... mores glamorous villaDitches dishonourable boyfriendLeaves dead end jobFalls in love with brooding, misunderstood SicilianFoils Mafia plot (It's Sicily right?)Discovers valuable treasureSorts out all her family's problems...and they all live happily ever after! There you go, you don't have to bother reading it now!
review 2: I found this book to be very readable, at times un-put-downable but with a couple of flaws nonetheless. The big "secret" as to why Flavia left Sicily and was almost phobic about going back was fairly predictable and not the scandal I was expecting, and hence it didn't quite ring true. Having said this, the novel provided a very authentic and believable commentary on the nature of relationships, particularly those between mothers and daughters, and the nature of acceptance and the value of letting go of fears and grudges. I found the characters to be mostly well drawn and developed, and the depictions of Sicily in both wartime and the modern day vivid and enticing. The passages describing food and recipes were so effective that I'm now thinking about doing a Sicilian cookery course. :)In summary, a good holiday or lazy Sunday read. less
