Demons

They first give me a blank stare
And then that cruel, cruel smile:
“You may be happy here
But it’ll only last a little while.”

They take my hand and squeeze
Just a little too hard;
They know my rising fear
Will keep me locked and barred.

They tease me, try to tell me
That it’ll be alright;
While I know my fading happiness
Is their great delight.

I try so hard to tell them
Just to leave me be;
But they only grip me tighter,
And laugh eternally.
