review 1: This story follows a couple who migrated West and their growing family. Their struggles, joys and sorrow are well told. Characters are well developed, particularly the main two characters. There was some difficulty transitioning from event to event in some areas, but were explained later in the story. Some sentiments were expressed repeatedly through the novel but overall, this was a good book. A political goal is introduced in the last 1/4 of the book, which the ending leaves you speculating about how it all turned out.
review 2: smidge under 4 stars (just upped my review, can't get this book outa my mind)This is a story that spans about 25 years of a couple that homesteads in wild Montana. It was like an epic, with all the hardships pioneers experienced while
... moresettling the west.It was enjoyable but for a few things. The hero cheats. I can't STAND cheating and this was glossed over like it really wasn't a big deal. It's also weird to me that when the heroine thinks about him cheating, it "stirs her desire" of him.I don't think so.There were also many repetitive passages where the author felt the need to remind us of past moments.Still, Ms. Bittner can truly draw me into a story and paint a beautiful picture. less
