review 1: For en fantastisk flott roman! Dette er min første roman av Roy Jacobsen og det har vært en fryd å lese om familien ute på Barrøy på Helgelandskysten i Nordland. Jacobsen treffer spikeren på hodet i beskrivelsene av de forskjellige personene i familien, og ikke minst beskrivelsene av forholdet menneskene har til været og avhengigheten av fisket for å overleve. Her er den nordnorske kulturen som kjennetegner landsdelen fra sørgrensa i Nordland til grensa mot Russland i nord. En norsk feel-good-roman? Absolutt!!!
review 2: 3.5 Written in a distant 3. person voice, this story moves forward as the ocean, slowly and at times abruptly, and as the sea smoothly caresses or crashes ashore, the happenings in the story takes the characters either by storm or as ... moresilent, invisible movement. The invisible is about the island and how the island treats and challenges the island dwellers - how to balance a life at sea and on the soil of the isle. Beautiful, stripped down, unpretentious prose. Well worth the read - especially if you like the maritime island theme :) less
