review 1: Blood Land is a great novel! It's mysteries unravel slowly and doesn't give out hints that can ruin the surprises, and there are definitely surprises. It's a western story set in the ranch lands of Wyoming involving family greed, murder, lots of alcohol, but also redemption and love. It's chock full of action, adventure, intrigue and interesting characters. Guthrie really knows how to spin a great mystery! If you've never read a western before don't let that stop you, this was my first and I loved it!
review 2: This book is now retitled "Blood Land," and it's the first in the Sheriff James Pruitt series of Wyoming crime adventures. Our protagonist is an Afro-American Vietnam veteran who is now in his 5th elected term as a county sheriff, quite an anomaly
... more. His Caucasian wife is murdered, and that traumatic experience reactivates the sheriff's attachment to whiskey. He'd stayed on the Wagon for over 12 years, now he feels everything slipping away. His daughter has hated him since an affair with another woman cost him his marriage and destroyed their family several decades ago. She reappears in his life as the girlfriend of the criminal defense lawyer turned college professor who has agreed to represent her uncle, the suspect in the murder. Complex webs of intrigue emerge, as mineral rights that create great wealth for some but not for others are the subject of conspiracies, and even additional homicides. Normally I don't take a shine to westerns as a genre, but this author has a captivating fluency with the English language. His metaphors are beautiful, his insights into human nature are profound and well-integrated into the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed the accurate portrayals of the criminal justice system and the role of the defense in the metric of capital case litigation in a rural setting. Five stars. less
