review 1: It's a treat to find a solid and tough mystery with as fully realized a sense of place as Blood Land inhabits. The action is less about the characters than about the rugged Wyoming life they live. I read straight through this book in a few days. The writing is thoroughly skilled, from plotting to narrative to language. The story is fairly brief (just under 2oo pages), moving fairly directly through to its resolution, with the main plot, the backstory, and some character-building narrative seamlessly slotted together. I'm delighted to find a new author to follow. That said I must confess I had my qualms when I saw that it was self-published at Smashwords, where I have rarely found anything that was even readable, much less good. For me that imprint means not only self-publis... morehed--a convenience these days--but also self-edited, or rather, not at all edited. Not in this case; everything about this book from the quality of the writing to the details of the text is nothing short of completely professional.
review 2: I don't read many Westerns, but I enjoyed this one. I liked the way that the author would show song lyrics at the beginning of chapters. He starts off with 'Death Letter' by legendary blues singer and guitarist Son House. It made me go to Youtube to listen to it. Another reviewer commented that the book reminded him of an episode of Longmire and I would agree. Sheriff Pruett, the main character is a troubled character who deals with his demons on a daily basis, but he is a tenacious and honest officer of the law. less

Great author - wonderful writing. Finally found someone to *almost* come close to James Lee Burke
