review 1: "A is for animals - friends, not food. We don't eat our friends, they'd find it quite rude.""Z is for zero, no animals harmed. Hooray for the day when they're no longer farmed!"This is my favorite book by Ruby Roth so far. My son isn't even two yet and he loves this book and gets excited when we read it to him. Some reviewers were concerned about the lack of a consistent rhyme scheme - which is true, the rhymes are sort of all over the place, but I didn't feel that it detracted value from the book. I actually thought it made it all the more interesting to read. Society gets too wrapped up in patterns and schemes sometimes and when that happens importance is based on repetition rather than free formed inspiration.I thought Ruby did a great job with the message of this book a... morend not only does it introduce vegan values, it teaches the alphabet in a cute and fun way! This is wonderful for parents who are raising their children to be vegan as it will be very relatable for them. Some books about veganism are overwhelming and intimidating - not this one!Beautiful artwork and beautiful message! Good work, Ruby Roth! Vegans everywhere thank you!
review 2: I don’t usually like “issue” books that are meant to teach a lesson, but this is actually not that bad, or that preachy. I don't love the rhymes ("Aa is for animals--/friends, not food./We don't eat our friends,/They'd find it quite rude.") but that could just be me. The focus on treating others how you would like to be treated is nice, but also means the book isn’t just about being vegan; there are also pages about zoos (“Jj is for jail”), animal shelters not stores, no animal testing, etc. Most parents who pick this up to share with their kids will probably agree with everything in it, so not a problem. less
