review 1: A surprisingly satisfying mystery. A few things about it didn't work for me, but overall I found it very enjoyable. One thing that I didn't much like is that I figured out what I thought was the answer to the mystery about midway- I felt there was a giant neon sign suddenly showing me the way. However, there's a satisfying twist at the end that made up for my early solution. I also didn't like the character of Cate very much, though think she was realistically drawn. She seemed just a bit too credulous and a bit too hapless for my tastes. As a former public defender, I have spent some time (thankfully limited) inside prisons and jails and with convicts, and Cate didn't seem to me to be a good choice for a probation officer working inside the walls. Still overall I liked t... morehe book. I felt it had a hint of what Tana French does so much better.
review 2: Wow. I did not see the ending of this book coming at all. The writing in this book is excellent; I would never have guessed this was the author's first book. The best way I know to put it is this book reads like it has been written by someone who knows what they are doing. The story draws you in immediately, the characters are relatable and have authentic voices and the circumstances are realistic. Really excellent; I will definitely read this author's future work. less
