review 1: 3.5 stars. A disturbing story of slavery/subservience that unfolds into far more than it seems to be. What bothered me the most while reading: the main character is given opportunities to change the flow of events time and time again, yet he stubbornly clings to what he finds familiar. A believable tendency at first, but after a while, I just wished he would go on and take stronger action instead of merely cringing away or reacting.
review 2: I cannot recommend the book. I wanted to like the book but the main character was obnoxious and not particularly bright. The story, while having its moments, was largely uninspired. Yes, the story was passably novel but the one thing that made the novel readable was that it was thankfully short. I think the author has prom... moreise but this first novel was not written well. It could have used a good editor. The whole story was disjointed; maybe that was a clever ploy by the author to have the writing mirror the title but it was painful at times to read. There is much to like about the novel, it just was not a book I enjoyed. less
