review 1: The book drags you in with some weird and somewhat gross mental images, but it's difficult not to be intrigued from the very beginning. The story unfolds through the eyes of a number of funky characters and even though some of them are totally unlikeable, you still want to know what happens to them. The scifi is pretty solid and interesting, even if it doesn't hold up very well when Boudinot goes into details -- he would be better off just dealing with the post-apocalyptic images. I was hooked right until the end, but a little disappointed as to how the plot played out in the end, as there would've been all sorts of interesting possibilities here. All in all a great book though, I might very well be interested in other stuff by Boudinot.
review 2: I loved the t
... moreone, and the surreal aspect of the story. Wait, what story? I mean, this was more about a future history and did a great job of providing a (fucked up) overview of a (fucked up) reality, but a story it was not. Alas, I like a narrative structure that's rather traditional. This book evoked for me the same trippy feelings I got while reading Nick Harkaway's The Gone Away World, but Harkaway's book has narrative punch and not so much "wtf"? I'm afraid I'm just too linear for this one. less
