review 1: This book contains the themes of guilt, redemption, forgiveness, and love amongst other things. Wait...I already used that for my Crime and Punishment review. What could this trashy looking, obscure fantasy novel have in common with one of the greatest books of all time?! Wolfbreed is based on the anime Elfen Lied, which is in turn the love child of X-men and Crime&Punishment. I don't blame you if you aren't convinced yet, but just change the sexes of the 2 main protagonists, change Russian to German, change serial killer to war criminal and best friend to family. Presto! The similarity should be a little more clear now. Like her literary counterpart Raskolnikov, Lilly has murdered someone dear to her only love, and is torn apart by guilt and the fear that confession will e... morend that relation forever. Both Lilly and Rodion recieve forgiveness, do an act of extreme repentence, and undergo a complete rebirth. The central message is one of humanism and universalism. Even the most horrible deeds can be repented for if the criminal is truly remorseful. That criminal is worthy of forgiveness. This is possible because the power of love is stronger than revenge and hatred. Of course not every criminal is going to feel remorseful. Like his fellow psychopath Svidrigailov, Erhard is a man totally incapable of love, pity, or remorse. Erhard orders the murders of hundreds of innocent people without any feeling, because to him only German Christians count as human beings (not that he has that much feeling for them either). Overall, the central characters and themes are not too far from the original. Has Swann by adapting elfen lied inadvertently succeeded where even the great Woody Allen failed, by creating a C&P adaptation that average Americans can enjoy? Surprisingly yes. It is only too bad that this book can only be found in the book store buried in a sea of terrible para-romance novels where more serious readers will have a hard time finding it! The small American chapter of Dostoevsky fans (especially small here in the South) will probably have to continue to wait for a book that will gain our favorite author a larger place in the hearts of American readers. Wolfbreed was however a truly wonderful gem of American fantasy and a heroic effort for Russian lit fans everywhere.
review 2: I picked this book up the week at a used book store knowing that it looked pretty silly. But, I need a lot of silly to take my mind off of the lack of sleep in the middle of the night when feeding my infant. So, silliness encouraged me to buy it and read it.It was, as it turns out, rather silly. It is one of the books that should be filed in the paranormal romance section of a book store and then only read by those who are silly of heart. It is set in the 11st in old timey Prusia. A young man with only one arm stumbles upon a 17-year-old naked lady. What he doesn’t know is that she has recently escaped from being held prisoner. While escaping she turned into a giant wereworld and murdered all of her captors. Hiding her and nursing her back to health at his family’s farm, the plot thickens. It reads quickly, is more than a bit repetitive and overly romantic. Sure, there are a whole lot of blood and guts, but it is the kind that is glossed over because of the silly plot. less
