review 1: Has been my first experience with short stories and have felt so so amazing after reading this beautiful piece from Manto sahab. Have loved how he has painted his thinking with such clarity and detailing on the canvas. His choice of words has been immaculate especially in stories that he has weaved on the backdrop of the partition. Really liked the story "Bitter harvest" that left so many questions to be answered and that too in just three pages. Have been amazed by the display of the depth that he has shown in each and every word of his. The following paragraph of his sums up all.."When I thought about these abducted girls, I only saw their protruding bellies. What was going to happen to them and what they contained? Who would claim the end result? Pakistan or In... moredia?"
review 2: When I picked up the book, it was the name Toba Tek Singh that led me to believe that I was going to read some quaint simple Indian stories. What it actually had was completely different - and I guess not having any background on Manto was a big part of not knowing what to expect. However, though the initial few stories were unsettling, I really liked almost every story after the first few once i got the hang of Manto's way of writing. Though he wrote in urdu, the english translation of his stories is very well done and seems to maintain the every aspect, thought and feeling. Good idea to check out more on Manto on wiki :-) less
