review 1: "They say a city is at the bottom of all that water.Oh, marauder. Make me a drink. I’m on my way."Some beautiful poems here, great insight into the experience of being black and queer in America. My only real complaint is that the poems get a little samey after a while, I think mostly due to how many of them follow the same couplet-heavy format. The long prose-poem (I forget the title, don't have the book with me as I write this) is a little clunky in places, but by the end of it I was hooked. Also, these poems are downright sexy in many places, the kind of book you might feel bashful reading in public (not that anyone would know).
review 2: A fantastic collection of poetry that explores connection and loss, strength and weakness, lust and love, and the natur
... moree of race in the 21st century. This is a book of poems about being human, seeking out humanity, and sending out a powerful yell to the world, to be heard. Check out these great lines:“...a violent pause between your question / and what I will not say. I have no answer; // my throat is the ocean now.”“I saw us breathing on the other side of after.”“You answer his fist and the blowshatters you to sparks.Unconscious is a better place, but swim backto yourself.Behind a door you can’t open, he drinksto keep loving you, then wades out into the blue hour.” --“Cruel Body” less

Bare, gorgeous poems, magnificently dressed. To return to, in particular: "In Nashville"

Solid. But 'History, according to Boy' is deserving of four stars alone.
