review 1: This book made my heart hurt...but in a good way. This is an incredible story, with amazing writing (I hope that one day I can write as beautifully as the author). I love that the events in this book were inspired by a soldier dog named Airedale Jack who dragged himself, shot and half dead, through a war zone to save a large amount of human soldiers by bringing a critical message back to HQ. He died minutes after delivering the message. This book was hard to read at some parts, but I hated to put it down. I love this story, and I have learned a great deal from it, not just about incredible writing, but about the reality, or at least as much as is able to be put on paper, about WWI.
review 2: Set in England and France, "Soldier Dog" tells the story of a young ma
... moren who runs away from an abusive father and joins the Queen's service in hopes of finding his brother who is already in France fighting the Hun. Not a student of history, I don't know how accurate the historical facts are, but I was impressed by the author's ability to portray the oppressiveness and sheer terror of the World War I trench warfare. Some of the descriptive writing in the middle might be challenging and a bit tedious for children, but the beginning and ending of Angus' tale are quite exciting. less
