review 1: Yes, and I'm sorry I had to give it a "1". I'm being honest here. This book seemed to have been written in a few short hours, like a short story some teacher asked a student to write for a class. It could have been great, with more time, more imagination, more background, more character development... Basically, only the IDEA behind the plot was good. Writing was mediocre.Jacob's daughter (Abby) is not even Jacob's daughter. And for Jacob to be caught up in having to marry her mother (Lizzie) the way it happened was totally unbelievable wrought with lies, and manipulations. The idea that Jacob mourned unshaven for over 13 years for his dead wife whom he didn't even love, then the very week (unbeknownst to him) his one true love (Lizzie) returns, he had already shaved his be... moreard (meaning he's back on the market). Unbelievable. The Elders decide that Jacob sired Abby before Lizzy took off with some Englischer and so when she shows back up he's told he has to do the right thing and marry her (without any other punishment?) Unbelievable.Within 1 week, he goes from still mourning, to being betrothed to the woman he yearned for all these years. Unbelievable.Given a few more weeks of writing to work out plot, history and characters it might have been a believable and complete story. I thought it was a freebie; it should have been. Sadly I did in fact spend $1.99 on it. The cover must have drawn me in... it is cute! Many freebies I've read have surpassed this one. And now I hear there are more in a series? Not for me.
review 2: These characters are so one-dimensional that this almost reads like a poorly done attempt at convincing Amish teens that the Amish life is wonderful, while English life is full of rape and drugs. There's a "plot" about Lizzie's older brother that just gets dropped, never to be brought up again. (Why did he lie to both Lizzie and Jacob to keep them apart?) Lizzie's 10 year old, Abby, says things like "I thought I would miss my cell phone and television, but having a family is so much better!" No 10 year old in the history of ever has said that. Does Jacob stop shaving eventually? What's with not one but TWO deaths in childbirth/pregnancy? Not to mention how fertile the Amish appear to be, what with all of the getting pregnant on the very first try. I'm all for fun, quick reads, but not at the expense of basic character development. less
