review 1: Meandering in parts and the supernatural motif is a tad underused despite certain lurid scenes. But it can only have been written by a Singaporean. Plenty of ambiguity and mixed feelings about the little red dot. The last quarter picks up in pace and power as the supernatural as a metaphor for progress develops more traction. Pretty fluid storytelling from someone with a filmmaker's eye. Promising debut. Looking forward to next book
review 2: At first I could not get into this story. It was so slow and I had no connection to the character but after some encouragement from my sister I plowed on and once past page 70 I couldn't put it down. The main character Ling/Casandra is a character that sometimes you will like and sometimes want to smack. History and some s... moreupernatural thrown in, enough that the reader is not inundated with either. Ms. Tan's ending was not quite what I expected but its not anti-climatic either.Interesting read. less
