review 1: I wanted to love this book for many reasons : as an art history major and as person with Jewish ancestors and because my unusual maiden name Bickart is used for a character in the book. I could never really empathize with the main character or follow the disjointed narrative. There were too many art dealers and friends that I never cared about. I loved reading about the paintings though and the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime continue to disgust and amaze me. I would probably have preserved to read the bio of the woman who inspired the Rose character . As fiction I give it a **As a history lesson ***
review 2: There were many things I liked about this book. I learned a lot about the Nazi occupation of France and how it effected the art world.
... moreMax,a Jewish art dealer's son is the main character, telling the story in the first person, but the hero of the story is Rose, based on a true character who was influential in saving untold numbers of art treasures from the Nazis.Max is difficult. The book is written about him and his family in the larger world of Nazi and post-Nazi Paris. In post-Nazi Paris he is living with a Jew who survived the concentration camps. I never got around to liking Max in the first part of the book, so I have little sympathy for him in the later part. Then suddenly he's in America. It's worth the read, but it won't be fun. less
