review 1: I had high hopes for this book when I started it, I was let down almost immediately. It just feels incomplete, like she could have included so much more information than she did. I guess that's how Summer felt when every one kept so much from her during her life but it made the story kind of boring. I was kind of confused at the end when she met Josephine.. I understand why Summer felt awkward and uncomfortable when they met and she put together who Josephine was, but who did Josephine think Summer was? Lol.. Her father says at the end he doesn't know if Josephine knows that he is her dad, so who did she think HE was? Just a friend of her mothers? It seems strange to me that she would fly out there to visit some random man that used to know her mom because he sent her lett... moreers from the pysch ward. I know him being in the accident with her makes him kind of significant, but it still seems odd. That stuff aside, I was disappointed when Josephine was the big thing Summer found out about, you pretty much knew from the beginning that he had a secret daughter. I wanted more to happen with her mother. And Samantha almost seemed like a pointless character. And Phillip?? We don't get to know how that ended up? These characters have little depth. Also, I was not fond of the time jumps, and there was too much back and forth, kind of felt unorganized to me. I feel like it ended too soon, or that somebody had ripped out all of the important pages. So many loose ends! Disappointing. I would not recommend it.
review 2: Sara Shepard certainly does like her twist endings. This one doesn't pack quite the wallop of PLL, but it didn't need to. I liked this book quite a bit. I've always been a fan of Shepard's writing style. My only complaint is how MUCH every bizarre plot device seemed to come out of nowhere like a rope entangling you, and by the end you were totally bogged down with all these ropes and you had to remember each storyline and what was going on before it all made sense and you were 'free'. Many people didn't like the interjected letters from Summer's dad because they were confusing, but I personally liked them. I like it when authors throw in seemingly unrelated, unexplained elements as long as they aren't too confusing. They keep me turning pages to see how the meaning will reveal itself.I think the proof that this was a truly good book, at least in my opinion, is that I liked the book even though I did not like Summer as a character at all, which is rare for me. less
