review 1: The cover was scary and the novel started as the cover looked, sort of superficial and very "American". I was not enthused but as the book went on it became more and more serious in it's subject matter. Initially there was no real discussion of the issues the characters faced and it seemed too glib. However the characters were beautifully flawed and as I read on there was more and more exposure of the problems they were all facing and the interlinking of family lives and loves and losses. Facing abandonment, mental illness, racism and cancer the characters began to reveal themselves and I was sucked into the novel. Not a page turner but worth a read.
review 2: The book had so much potential but I feel like it was too stretched out and the author left out too ma
... moreny details. And some parts didnt even make sense! Like when Josephine came, why would she fly out to visit a mann who was her moms friend? And wasn't he friends with mark? Didnt mark remember him? Phillip was an important character but he was left out a lot of the book a lot. Sara Shepard could have done much better less

It was a good story but I DO NOT like her writing style. It jumps around way too much!
