review 1: A very sweet coming of age story about a boy's relationship with his mother and grandmother who is experiencing the onset of alzheimer's disease; topics rarely dealt with in this point of view for this type of character. The author did a fantastic job in painting the backdrop with her vivid nature descriptions of the upper Midwest lakes, reminiscent of the adventure writing of Gary Paulsen and Gordon Korman that is so popular with this audience. The book is a great for reluctant readers with its short chapters and moving action. My only wish is that these type of books would get more attractive covers (a hope for the paperback run) as this type if twee, animated cover may be a hard sell to the 10-14 year old boys that this story is trying to reach. Overall a quiet read tha... moret will be perfect for the more introverted, sensitive reader.
review 2: Truly enjoyed the writing style of this story. The description the author gives of the nature that abounds around the cabin makes you feel like you could be there sitting on the dock, listening to the water lap up around the edges. The story is very sweet and a coming of age type of story. The first few paragraphs were very funny- how a 12 year old boy sees girls. He is kind of a quiet guy and not really able to talk to girls, so the girls he knows puzzle him a lot. His mom and dad got a divorce and so now it is just he and his mom that will spend the summer at the cabin with his grandmother. A mystery pops up and he meets a girl at the lake. A friendship blossoms and the two solve the mystery. Quite a charming story. Good for 10 and up. Many passages in this book could be used for a writing class to show how to describe rather than tell how something happens. less
