review 1: 2009 Geisel Honor awardI can see how this book was awarded a Geisel. It is fascinating, the text and vocabulary are extremely accessible for young readers to listen to and the photography used in this book is amazing. But ewwwwwwww!!!! Had my hand over my mouth as I read this one. That being said, I wish there were more books like this (maybe not as much on the disgusting side) available for young readers.
review 2: Wolfsnail: A Backyard Predator, written and illustrated by Sarah C. Campbell, describes the daily routine of a wolfsnail. The author shows the snail as it comes out of its’ shell to find food using beautiful close-up photographs. As the wolfsnail travels along a hosta plant the author explains the differences between this snail and most land s
... morenails through words and photos. Sarah Campbell takes the reader through each step of the process of catching food. She even has a worm move close to the wolfsnail after it has already eaten, but she explains that they do not eat worms. The snail then finds a cool spot to fall asleep and the story ends. The author includes more information about the wolfsnail’s life-cycle as well as a glossary of terms in the back of the book. Children in grades K-3 could learn a lot from this book. The author shows and explains in simple language what a wolfsnail does in a day. She also shows the difference between wolfsnails and other snails with photos that kids will be able to see and understand. The facts and definitions at end of the book allow children to explore and discover even more about this obscure garden creature. less
