review 1: Well written, with some interesting characters and ideas. It didn't draw me in enough to rate higher on my personal scale, though. The non chronological unfolding of the story was effective and probably necessary, but I'm sure that was part of what kept me a step outside the immersion I prefer.I don't know quite what I think of the setting: 1936-1940 Europe, with Nazi Germany obviously very significant. It definitely works, but maybe it just felt too heavy for my mood at the time of reading? I don't think it's supposed to be quite "alternate universe" even though more people seem aware of the existence of vampires and/or hunters than is true in "reality."Seeing as this is the first book of a series, I'm certainly interested enough to read more.

... moreuthor must have liked the idea of having a major character who is a Jewish vampire, but not enough to think through the concept. The character exhibits no sign of his Jewish heritage in his thoughts or behavior, and he originally comes from an era where there was no such thing as a secular or cultural Jew. The deeply religious milieu that he came from should have some influence on his character. Half way through the book we get some of his early history, but the transition to thinking like a vampire is described in vague terms. Why bother to make a character a Jew if you aren't going to handle the inner conflict between the Jewish religion and being a vampire? She also didn't really utilize this character very much in the Nazi era plot. I also didn't like the author's tendency to delay crucial flashbacks and leave us wondering. It seems like a very artificial and manipulative way to create suspense. The plot itself was, unfortunatly, not as suspenseful as it should have been. less
