review 1: Set in late 19th century New Zealand, this is an epic adventure novel with plenty of unsavory characters and a plucky heroine in Elaine O’Keefe that you care about. The second novel of a trilogy, the story stands alone. It’s lengthy, almost 700 pages, but a relatively quick read and the descriptions of New Zealand landscape like Pancake Rocks, and Maori customs, lore, and spiritualism, make it an intriguing read. I was rapidly turning pages to the very end, which was somewhat predictable, but nonetheless satisfying.
