review 1: Set in late 19th century New Zealand, this is an epic adventure novel with plenty of unsavory characters and a plucky heroine in Elaine O’Keefe that you care about. The second novel of a trilogy, the story stands alone. It’s lengthy, almost 700 pages, but a relatively quick read and the descriptions of New Zealand landscape like Pancake Rocks, and Maori customs, lore, and spiritualism, make it an intriguing read. I was rapidly turning pages to the very end, which was somewhat predictable, but nonetheless satisfying.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, I have read the first in the series and really enjoyed that so wanted to know what happened to the characters. My only criticism of this book is that it had been sometime since I had read the first in the se... moreries and it took me a while to remember who was related to who!! A family tree would've helped! ! otherwise nice easy read with interesting facts about the mourai culture. less
