review 1: When I discovered Sarah Mayberry, I discovered a wonderful author. I think I found her midway through her backlist so I was able to go back and forward. Love when that happens. I also discovered the joy of ereading part way through reading her books so while I have many now as ebooks, I don’t have them all. I was picking up her latest the other day and found a couple there that I didn’t have on Kindle, Kobo or IBooks (gotta love an IPad!!) so I added them to my ever growing list of Kindle books. So after a wonderful run of RS books, I was in a bit of a mood for a straight simple contemporary and who better than Sarah Mayberry? Well – there are a lot of good ones – but Sarah filled the need. I looked to the three I had just uploaded. I settled on Suddenly Y... moreou and was in less than a page when I realized I’d already read this one. But since I do so love her books, the make great comfort reads, I went for a reread, a nice fuzzy and cozy few hours of reading time.I may already have a review here of this book – but what the heck – here’s another one. Harry Porter (yes, the heroine is the only one that Harry lets get away with the jokes you are already thinking) happens to drive by Pippa in his car and notices that she has car troubles. When he stops, she assures him she has it under control but when he drives by several days later and the car is still there on the side of the road, he wonders if she was telling him the truth. Pippa is the former girlfriend of his best bud Steve. Their relationship ended badly when Pippa got pregnant and Steve wanted nothing to do with her. When Harry notices the car, he confronts Pippa and she very reluctantly admits her strained finances. Harry takes it upon himself to repair her car as he is a mechanic by trade. While grateful, Pippa is also somewhat frustrated as she doesn’t really have the money, but also has a great deal of pride and doesn’t want to be seen as a charity case.Harry refuses to be reimbursed for his work and in fact, he ends up helping her with more and more tasks around the house.Pippa and Harry are wildly attracted to each other but there are a number of problems. First off is Steve. It’s just not done to go after a buddy’s former girlfriend even if she is an ex. Harry has a great deal of trouble believing that Steve is as big an ass as Pippa seems to think he is and Harry is just waiting for Steve to come up to the plate as a father. There is also the issue that Harry is a lot like Steve in that he’s only looking for a good time and not at all interested in a long term relationship and with a child to take care of, Pippa can’t be irresponsible any longer.Reading these two people work through their issues makes for a wonderful read. Harry slowly grows up in the course of the book. He makes for a wonderful hero. I love the fact that he’s a blue collar worker and perfectly happy being so. I’m a big fan of the blue collar hero myself. Pippa is equally a wonderful heroine. She’s not taking Steve’s negligence lying down and in fact it taking him to court for child support. She is NOT one of these self-sacrificing heroines who lets the baby daddy off the hook. While she is in rather dire straits at the moment, she does have plans. She was somewhat immature herself when seeing Steve but has been forced to do her growing up already. There is nothing earth shattering about this book. Instead it’s a very believable, realistic story of two decent and good people at different stages in their life, falling in love and working to overcome their differences. This is the kind of story that Sarah Mayberry writes and I am very grateful that she does.Reading her books is like drinking hot cocoa on a cold and stormy winter’s day while you lounge in your pajamas, perfectly relaxed and peaceful when all around is chaos.
review 2: Writing: 4Story: 4Satisfaction: 5A simple story with honest characters. Harry Porter is the guy who won't settle down and Pippa White is a single mom burned badly from a past relationship. It's a pretty common trope but Mayberry has created very relatable and full characters with a witty dynamic. Very enjoyable and thoroughly fleshed out despite being a relatively short book. less
