Don't Even Think About It
review 1: It's no secret that high school is tough in many respects. Part of the problem is the meanness of one's peers, but other elements that contribute to the unpleasantness would have to be the snarkiness that lurks everywhere and the secrets that lead to drama. This book nails all of those aspects of how school society with a nifty twist. After several sophomores in one particular homeroom in a New York high school take flu shots that have an unusual side effect, they find that they can hear the thoughts of their peers and parents. Obviously, while it might be enlightening to know what those around you REALLY think, it also might lead to disappointment as well as complications. After all, some secrets are meant to be kept. Mackenzie, for instance, cheated on her boyfriend Coop... moreer, and she's desperate to keep him from learning the truth. Tess can't wait to learn what her best male friend Teddy really thinks about her. As the members of the homeroom become more comfortable with their newfound abilities, everyone waits for the other shoe to drop and for Cooper to learn the truth about Mackenzie. Hilarious in many respects and filled with teens with whom readers will identify, the story is told from a first person plural point of view, which makes the book seem like some sort of mind meld as all those voices almost seem to assault the reader. While that might confuse and annoy some readers, I loved it and admired the writing skills that it would require. The only thing that bothered me was not knowing why it took Cooper so long to hear the others' thoughts and why some characters could hear through walls while others couldn't. Perhaps that will be explained in the next installment of this series. I predict that readers will not even think about picking this one up but will be quickly drawn to it, devouring it while thinking about whether reading others' thoughts would be a gift or a curse.
review 2: I read this book in a day and it had me laughing out loud repeatedly. When the 10th graders in homeroom class 10b get their flu shots, they get a bit more than they bargained for - the ability to hear other people's thoughts. I totally love how the author details the teenager's thoughts as Olivia obsesses about everything - worrying about the fact that she thinks weird thoughts and that now the other kids from her homeroom class would not only know that she has strange thoughts, but that she worries about them knowing that she is worrying about that. Told by the teens as a group, because when you can share thoughts, individuality blurs, we see how being able to hear thoughts affects several members of the group. It can have it's good points, but it also definitely has some drawbacks. All in all, I totally loved this book. I found it to be funny and lighthearted and a fun read. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it. less
