review 1: Mrs Eaden, the country's sweetheart, Domestic Goddess of the nineteen sixties, has recently died and her company is holding a competition in her memory: five keen bakers - four women and one man - vie to become the new Mrs Eaden. With beautifully subtle portraits of all the characters - the competitors, their families, Mrs Eaden and her husband - this is, on the surface, a light as a soufflé summer read, but there's a hard sharp layer to the story: of broken marriages, infertility, eating disorders - and the competition is fierce; everyone wants to win, everyone has a good reason to be the heroine or hero of the tale. Which is not to say that this is a tragic tale, dark as sachertorte, hard as an over-baked flapjack. It's a sweet tale with a bitter edge - just enough to k... moreeep it from cloying; more lemon meringue than Baked Alaska and all the more enjoyable for it.
review 2: Women from different walks of life but have one thing in comman love baking and enter a competition. The contestants have another in common from the outside their lives look normal but all have problems in their lives and each are unhappy in a certain way. Jennifer has decided to be called jenny amd home life is really getting bad and Claire and mike find things out about each other.Jenny is lost and needs to find herself Karen is a flirt but think something is missing Claire needs a boost in life Vicki crazes her mother to take interest and encourage her mike need companionship .The father of Claire's child comes back into her life but it seems not for the child but for fame if Claire wind. Jenny does a lovely meal which her girls appreciate but not her husband at present seems to be going through a midlife crisis and not pleasant to jenny. Did not like Karen but further on I have changed my mind as you find out why she is like that.Really enjoyed the book and the exploits and lives of the contestants . less

This is a fabulous read, as delectably constructed as the mouth-watering recipes it's packed with!
