review 1: I want to give this a higher rating, though 4 stars is by no means bad, as Scarlett Thomas' The End of Mr Y was such an important book for me, at an important time. However, though I enjoyed this book, I found it frustrating - lacking the 'magic' I felt in The End of Mr Y. It is a worthwhile read, in my opinion, but somehow unsatisfying. It also made me think about how much I'd like to learn to knit socks...
review 2: I must say that the characters were lovely and real, I could picture each of them in their personalities for who they were and I remembered each character very easily while reading.On the other hand, I feel as though the story was simply following an almost-middle-aged lady through her daily life while she questioned existence and the purpose of t... morehe universe. Though it wasn't quite her posing the questions rather than her having the theories thrust upon her and her having to study them. She never studies the theories to any excessive length but she does speak of them so often in the novel that it feels as though she is rambling. Alongside a couple of moments of flashbacks, it felt like the novel moved very slowly. She posed an idea near the end of the novel about a real life theory being presented better in fiction than in non-fiction because people will try to believe it as real rather than try to disprove it as non-fiction. I think Thomas may have been aiming for something similar in this novel.I struggled to push through and finish it but I did, finding that at about 80% of the way through the story itself began to pick up and become interesting, where things began to happen as a result of the many different things that occurred through the first 80% of the novel (despite even more rambling).The final page ties off everything really well and was certainly a satisfying finish to the marathon I underwent to complete the reading.Thomas, your theories are wonderful and you have a talent for creating realistic characters, kudos for the efforts. less
