review 1: For someone who spends so much of this book tediously explaining what makes a good story, the author implements absolutely none of her own advice. Redundant, flat characters, including a self-pitying protagonist who had no hope at all of being likeable; a plot that falls somewhere between sorely lacking and nonexistent; uninteresting and choppy timeline. I kept trudging through to see if maybe the author's goal in all her righteous preaching about good writing was, in fact, a cosmic joke in her own way - a strange use of irony, perhaps - but...nope. Not even that happened, because nothing happens in this book at all. Final verdict? I barely got through it, and I am avidly OCD about never leaving a book unfinished, no matter how bad. This one almost broke my principles. A c... moreomplete waste of time.
review 2: Sigh, I absolutely adored The End of Mr Y and have bought both PopCo (disappointing) and now this since... Admittedly, I liked this a lot more than PopCo. I still like Scarlett Thomas, I think it's her style of writing, but I'm not sure I got what was going on in this book really and neither of the most recent 2 have lived up to the expectation My Y created for me. That said, I'll probably still buy her next one :) Haha. less

The first 1/4 is a boring and pretentious meander through pseudo-intellectual BS. I gave up.

Fun read which pulls you in but in the end feels like a storyless story.
