review 1: Haunted by memories of her past Dessa has hit the road as an acrobat in a traveling circus. But unfortunately some of the circus members are a bit unscrupulous and a plot to rob from the queen lands Dessa in a bit of trouble. What has her even more troubled is running into the man she saw on the night her mother was murdered and her twin brother kidnapped. This fantasy action adventure is fun right from the very beginning. The story is engaging and the pictures are cartoonish but fit well with the story. Readers will be wondering what happened to Dessa's family and how Dessa an we friends are going to get out of the trouble they have landed themselves in right from the start. The storyline is a little simple for the ideas that it presents, but as The first book in the seri... morees it leaves a lot of room for growth. This book is great for intermediate readers. I would recommend it for readers in grades 4-7.
review 2: This feels partly like a medieval fantasy epic and partly like a Johnny Quest episode. In genre-medieval-city, a young female acrobat wonders if she'll ever find out what happened to her twin brother, while the goblin-like scoundrel of her circus troupe plans to rob the tyrannical queen. The dim-witted but sweet, ogre-like strong man is drawn into the plot, as well, which involves booby traps, chases, a near hanging, and a mysterious villain. All in all, it's a fun read that doesn't delve too deep and engages the emotions only on the most basic level, setting up the central mystery and quest for later volumes in the series. The artwork is very clean-line, bright-solid colors in style, which works well for the story. I could see this as a cartoon show for the tween-and-up crowd. less
