review 1: The map of the world has been redrawn! After a mysterious event ripped the world asunder, explorers set out and discovered it had become a patchwork of eras, places, and the unknown. Individuals, societies, and governments continue to struggle with the form of this new reality. "When" and "where" not only shape these new societies, but have a particular significance to Sophia, a resourceful young girl from a famous cartographer family. Now she must use her developing skills to find that family; her missing parents, and her uncle who was kidnapped for something he knew. Larger forces are at play though, and she will need new allies to keep them at bay. The mystery unfolds at an even pace, and while many threads resolve themselves, there are certainly enough left for more bo... moreoks. Just like Sophia, we too become explorers as she studies the maps and travels. This is worldbuilding at its best. Intertwined times and spaces as setting, cultures of the past and future, fantastical creatures, politics, and unique beliefs solidify a picture of a world unlike any other...one full of layers. The Glass Sentence heralds in a glorious new series for children's fantasy.
review 2: This is a very engaging book, I enjoyed it very much. The starting concept is novel, regarding the fracturing or disruption of ages so that parts of the world are in different "ages". Communication, commerce, travel and map-making are now totally different. I was particularly intrigued by the different types of maps that are discussed in this story, and how they might represent different things and be read in different ways. The main character is learning how to read many different types of maps in preparation to search for her parents when her uncle and tutor Shadrak is kidnapped. Her growing skill as a cartographer is tested sorely in her adventures to recover her uncle, especially when the world seems to be changing again... less
