review 1: I think I decided to read this after Daniel Kraus tweeted it he thought it could win a Printz. I liked it... but only as a fun read - not much more. It took a while to read, too, on simple fact that it's a long book. I don't know that its intended audience will be able to sit that long. That negative comment said, I liked this book a lot, and this review is probably riding on the coattails of me having finished Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith last night, and this not holding a candle to that. Unfair of me, I know.
review 2: Ritchie is smart, cynical, and in a lot of pain. He's also hilarious as he describes the making of his band, and in a parallel narrative, his time in a juvenile detention facility. In both places, Ritchie finds a suitably intelligent and
... morealoof friend: Elliot, his edgy band mate at home, and B'los, who tends the juvie library with Ritchie. It's very...male, with bonding rituals like screaming over guitars together and not talking about things that hurt. Ritchie's older sister, Beth, was killed in a car accident a few years before the book begins. Since then, Ritchie's dad has left and Ritchie's mom has found a girlfriend, who turns out to be the one adult able to reach the inner Ritchie. There are lots of musical references, lots of cerebral wisecracks, and lots of achingly adolescent Sturm und Drang. less
