review 1: Sean Doolittle understands that a great story requires great characters, and Lake Country is packed with memorable ones. His mastery of dialogue also helps propel a plot that would have been boring in lesser hands. The end is abrupt and a bit of a letdown after the roller-coaster that precedes it, but don't let that stop you from enjoying one of the best books from an author who continues to refine his craft.
review 2: Are Sean Doolittle's books the best-kept secret in thriller-dom? If so, maybe it's because he doesn't write about guys who are going to save the world. Or maybe it's because he doesn't set his books in New York or Paris or Shanghai. Doolittle writes about Midwesterners who seem real, down-and-outers who find themselves embroiled in something they... more shouldn't be. Each sentence of Lake Country ratcheted up the suspense and made me turn the pages faster and faster. In any case, this book should not be a secret. It won the International Thriller Writers' Award for Best Paperback Original. Read it and you'll see why. less
