review 1: Roger isn't your typical neighbourhood watch rep. In fact, this former cop and hero of the community is down right scary in Sean Doolittle's most mainstream novel yet 'Safer' - a story about a 30-some odd married couple moving to a small town community whose first introduction to the neighbourhood consists of an attempted burglary, rape and evidence tampering. Before long this once cosy street is turned on its head and a shady past brings light to present day wrong doings. Paul, a protagonist of sorts (and one half of the married couple recently moved in) is cuffed and thrown in jail accused of possessing pornographic images of his 13yro neighbour - naturally, street sheriff Roger gets involved in an attempt to salvage the neighbourhood's good standing amongst its peers. B... moreut it's this pillar of the community that ends up causing more harm than good to his fellow man using big brother tactics and taking extreme measures to maintain a happy facade. What makes 'Safer' so good is it's believable story and extra creepy characters in Roger Mallory and Darius Calvin (I wont spoil Darius' involvement) and the misguided perception of what makes a community 'safe'. I also liked the brotherhood aspect of the former and current police officers where every complaint, if made by an outsider, was secondary to their goals and standards. At times it felt a little padded (a particular scene of a round of golf comes to mind) but as the story progressed, these scenes added context and depth to the core plot and central characters. Overall, 'Safer' is solid crime read set in suburbia designed to breed paranoia and mistrust amongst neighbours - love thy neighbour at your peril - 3 stars.
review 2: Sean Doolittle, where have you been all my life? I can't believe I've never read a book by this suspense/thriller author. I am in awe. Suspense plot utterly believable all the way through, no unlikely twists or cartoonish turns. I'd say 3 of 4 suspenses, including by the stars in the field, start out absorbing, then fall apart or get silly by the end, often halfway in. This was solid, page by page to the last. Remarkable work. I'm snatching up all his earlier books for sure. less

Didn't like the way it started at the end and seemed to be telling the story in flashback mode.

Pretty decent page turner. Just goes to show that you really don't know your neighbors.
