review 1: I feel awful writing this review. I SOOOOOO wanted to like Ellen, so very very much. And I guess in the end I actually did like Ellen, it's her story I didn't overly enjoy.I love Ellen, she is me, perhaps not that extreme, but I could easily be her. I didn't love everything that happened here. I liked her resulting friendship and her budding romance. What I didn't like was there was way too many things going on in this story, all conveniently right out her back window or at work - numerous story lines resulting from both places... and many even more conveniently end up at the same hospital. How wonderful to be able to walk from you gunshot-wounded neighbor to your single new-mother neighbor, to your work friend caring for an abusing boyfriend's child all within the s... moreame hospital just to check up on all of their stories.WAY too much happening here. Too many story lines, too many characters to many times when introvert "invisible" Ellen is playing a leading roll in saving, helping, foiling, revealing, and being an all around hero. Way too unbelievable, to far-fetched, too cluttered. I would have liked to see Ellen involved in perhaps a few more fleshed out stories (perhaps those out her back window)... and forget the work drama. This seems to be getting great reviews and honorable shout-outs and I will admit they sucked me in - because I wanted to love Ellen... but I didn't end up loving the book she is in.
review 2: A life of abandonment and abuse lead Ellen to comfort herself with food which lead to obesity. She learned to make herself "invisible" to the world around her despite her size. A chance encounter with a blind woman ("Temerity") causes Ellen to finally make herself visible in ways she would never have expected as the two team up to help those even less fortunate than Ellen.Shattuck's writing is uneven at times, but her dialogue is fun and she manages to keep the storyline from getting impossibly cheesy. "Invisible Ellen" was a sweet story and a light, easy read with a message that was not overly dripping with melodrama. less

Easy read and nice story. A little too contrived and predictable.
