review 1: Pg i: "Danger in our food supply and how to correct it." seems to be the theme of this book. I have looked forward to finding these notes so I would do a review. Further resources sound good.Pg 393: These sound like "Sugar Snap" Ray's kind of people. The writer Aaron Newton rides a bike to work and had a CSA. Pg 261: No pictures or charts in the book for the Bull's eye eating plan but need an illustration. Pg 184: There is going to be more about global warning than Christianity from listings in the Index. There are listings for CSA's. Pg 186: There are 2 listings for Gandi and only one listing for Milton Friedman. Can you tell I read the index first?Pg 8: What's all the bad News? Oil, GMO, irrigated land is gone. Pg 13: Above all is the problem that petrol governs every m... moreovement. W. Churchill's interesting question for the future. 1. Drink it fast-a big party. 2.Sell to people that can pay. 3.Hoard at all costs. 4. ration it out fairly. 5. Fight over the rest.Pg 21: The center point of this book is that we must have a food system that is not fossil fuel dependent. Pg 30: World hunger is due to lack of small farmers and to the export to rich countries.Pr 49: 50 million new farmers was based on oil famine in Cuba. Who: food in the city, incentives, rooftop gardens, training, college courses. Pg 59: During WWII victory gardens produced as much as US farms combined.Pg 60: All problems summed: Climate change, oil, soil depletion, falling food supplies.Pg 66: Industrial farms of 3,000 acres may require only 2 people and a lot of fossil fuel; or 1,000 3 acres farms and 4-6,000 human beings. Pg 71: This is a new one. Something in the dirt makes up happy. :)Pg 94: Says we must cook as well as grow. And that means everyone. I didn't think to much of it myself. I hated that brush that went flat after scrubbing veggies. Pg 97: We can't just live out of the garden without big changes in the diet. The 200 year plan calls for wheat farms. Is that scriptural? Pg 118:; We also need 200 million new cooks that can use local inexpensive and available food. -Good goal!Pg 126: John Jeavons of Ecology Action has a plan for 700 Square foot for each adult. It takes 200 sq ft, 1/20 of an acre to have a loaf of bread a week. Pg 130: Only 2.5% of land produces vegetable, fruits and nuts. We need to grow more than lettuce and tomatoes. Pg 131: "One Circle" by David Duhaon tells how to live off 700 sgft. "Hungry Planet: What the world eats" Menzel and D'Aluisio may be a book to buy. It has pictures of one weeks food for people from countries around the world. It will change your way of eating and everyone that picks up this coffee table picture book. Pg 169: Another way that we are raiding the world. We are stealing from our children and grandchildren by borrowing both personnel and nutrition. Pg 177: 60% of the area of the garden should be put in compost able crops. Pg 204: A good description of what it 's like to cook in the old way. Pg 222: She is showing her socialist roots - universal right to nutrition?Pg 236: If distribution were perfect we could feed 13.2 billion people. Small farms would bring it closer. World average for food is $2 per day. Try eating that way. It's a challenge. Mostly beans and rice. Pg 241 Now she is for declining population -contraception. How can she side with contraception and socialism? OK, they leave room for people who don't believe in contraception. More kids on less energy. Pg 255: "rape nature to amass wealth for a few" We would all be better off if the rich had many many children with which to divide the inheritance. Pg 265: Building lots into a farm. Pg 271: American's diet requires 1.8 acres. Was that person? Pg 311: Access to Public land is a big question. I'm for it. Why not have hunting and gathering opened to cut down on pot growers. Why not turn the hogs loose. A breeding pair of Ferrell hogs would do better than a few goats. Pg 324: Seven good points on the family farm. Pg 348: They say there will be a threshold moment when things will change but get to work doing it now. Pg 367: Several books list for further reading.
review 2: I stumbled across this title in a Library Journal advertisement and decided to submit a request that it be purchased. I am so glad! I read a few pages and then find myself reading aloud large passages to my husband and anyone else within earshot. I confess at this writing I am only on page 46 of 363 pages but am having to return it because another library patron has requested it. I am getting right back in line! less
