review 1: It was still a wonderfully written book; however, it was just not as good as the first. The writing was became a bit jumbled at times as though the main narrator was rambling, but it added style and personality to the character. I loved the hint in the beginning about Lane. And although it seemed fairly obvious to me, it made me love the book more because I was able to connect the dots and understand it. I hope to see more works from this author I'm the future.
review 2: I quite liked this sequel to the Dark Unwinding. Things happen quickly in this Napoleon era, Parisian scene. Katharine is her predicatable spontaneous trouble seeker, but manages to survive her dangerous adventures with the help of questionable alliances. Her love interest Lane turns out to be... more a far more mysterous powerful character than what we esteemed from the first novel. There are some sad sacrifices but all seem to resolve itself it what is hopefully the final episode in this series. less
