review 1: Great book! I enjoyed reading a YA historic fiction book with an interesting female character and an unusual setting. Sometimes it didn't flow as well as I would have liked but even so I was captivated by the story and stayed up late reading it. The images of roller skating made me want to put my skates on and take a spin around the kitchen!The quirky uncle was a gem. The lady's maid reminded me of someone from 'Downton Abbey' or 'From Larkrise to Candleford'. And the workshop with its clockwork toys reminded me of the movie 'Hugo'. This book would also be fun as a movie--I could really imagine the scenes in my mind from all her descriptions. She was light on the romance which makes it appropriate for a 6th grader. I was surprised that several people die in a disaster but ... moreyou aren't sure until the end if one of them might turn out to be alive after all. The story isn't totally predictable even though as an adult I could catch the hints along the way of how things would probably turn out. It didn't keep it from being a fun read.
review 2: I picked this up because I was desperately craving a Victorian era novel, but I came dangerously close to DNFing this a couple of times. I really liked uncle Tully, with his strange contraptions and Drosselmeieresque attitude to his creations and the people around him but I was utterly unimpressed with Katherine and all the other sub-characters, including the wet blanket romance.The writing was okay, but Tully's constant "Simon's baby-ing," was sooooo creepy. less
